Si les grandes entreprises sont contraintes de rendre des comptes sur leurs \u00e9missions et de les r\u00e9duire, il faudra bien que quelqu&#039;un leur fournisse les moyens d&#039;y parvenir. Occidental souhaite \u00eatre ce fournisseur.<\/p>\n<h2>Quand la strat\u00e9gie rencontre le tableur<\/h2>\n<p>Pas encore autonomes. Selon des estimations ind\u00e9pendantes, le co\u00fbt de la capture directe du CO\u2082 dans l&#039;air se situe entre 600 et 800 dollars par tonne de CO\u2082 \u00e9limin\u00e9e, et ces estimations varient consid\u00e9rablement selon l&#039;installation et l&#039;\u00e9tape de traitement. La principale subvention am\u00e9ricaine, le cr\u00e9dit d&#039;imp\u00f4t 45Q, repr\u00e9sente environ 180 dollars par tonne pour ce type de capture. Sa rentabilit\u00e9 commerciale repose sur trois conditions : le maintien du soutien gouvernemental, la volont\u00e9 des acheteurs de payer un prix plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 pour une \u00e9limination certifi\u00e9e et la r\u00e9duction des co\u00fbts gr\u00e2ce aux \u00e9conomies d&#039;\u00e9chelle. Or, aucune de ces conditions n&#039;est garantie. Cette incertitude n&#039;est pas une faille dans l&#039;analyse, mais bien la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 du march\u00e9.<\/p>\n<h2>Le lien avec Berkshire<\/h2>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway is Occidental&#8217;s largest shareholder, holding a stake reported at around 28 percent, and with the OxyChem purchase it now owns the chemicals business outright as well. Few majors have a single investor this closely tied to both their equity and their assets.<\/p>\n<p>The signal is patient capital. Buffett has said he likes Occidental&#8217;s oil and gas position and its management. A shareholder willing to buy the chemicals unit at 9.7 billion dollars, and to keep adding to the stock over years, gives Occidental something most peers lack: a large owner who is comfortable with a long payback and unlikely to force a break up. That tolerance is exactly what a two bet strategy needs.<\/p>\n<p>It also concentrates risk. When one investor is this central, the company&#8217;s freedom of action is shaped by that relationship. For now it is an advantage.
