The reason is in the buying behaviour. Gartner’s research shows a typical B2B purchase now involves 6 to 10 stakeholders, and that buyers spend only about 17 percent of the entire buying journey meeting with suppliers, with as little as 5 to 6 percent of their time given to any single supplier. Face time is scarce and precious, and an energy trade show is one of the few places you can put several members of a buying committee in front of your team in the same week.

That is why it helps to think of a major show not as a marketing channel but as a compression event. It concentrates a year’s worth of otherwise scattered committee access into three or four days. National oil companies, majors and engineering contractors travel in delegations, so a single booked meeting can seat three decision roles at once. Nothing in a purely digital programme replicates that density of relevant, senior, in person contact.

CERAWeek by S&P Global in Houston is a different animal entirely. With over 10,000 senior participants, more than 1,600 C suite executives and scores of ministers, it is a leadership and deal shaping conference, not an exhibition hall. Its value is executive access and the conversations around it, not booth traffic. measurement problem is real. A deal touched at ADIPEC in November may not close until 2027, so any model that snaps shut 30 or 90 days after the show will systematically under credit the event and over credit whatever channel happened to be the last touch before signature. The fix is to measure on the timescale of the sale. Track sourced pipeline, opportunities where the event was the first touch, but lead with influenced pipeline, every open or won deal that had at least one event touch anywhere in its history, because on a long committee driven sale that is the truer measure of an event’s contribution.

Trade show marketing that produces pipeline in energy B2B is a three phase system run against the sector’s 12 to 24 month, committee driven buying cycle, not the act of renting a stand. This dossier reframes ADIPEC, Gastech, CERAWeek and their peers as compression events, and sets out the pre show, at show and post show system, and the long cycle measurement, that turns a stand into sourced and influenced pipeline.","date":"2026-07-28","readTime":"11 min read","author":"Project 54"},"quickAnswer":{"q":"How do you generate pipeline from energy trade shows like ADIPEC and Gastech?","a":"Trade show marketing that produces pipeline in energy B2B is a three phase system run against the sector's 12 to 24 month, committee driven buying cycle, not the act of renting a stand. Before the show you target named accounts, pre book meetings with several members of the 6 to 10 person buying committee, and secure speaking or hosted content slots. At the show you qualify hard and execute those booked meetings rather than scanning badges for volume. After the show you follow up within hours and nurture across many touches over a year or more, measuring influenced pipeline rather than last touch. This matters more in energy than almost any sector because buyers spend only about 17 percent of their journey with suppliers, and roughly 80 percent of trade show leads receive no follow up at all, so most exhibitor spend is wasted at the exact stage where pipeline is created."},"takeaways":["Energy runs on events. Buyers spend only about 17 percent of the buying journey with suppliers (Gartner), so the concentrated face time an event provides is a disproportionate slice of your total access to a committee of 6 to 10 people.","The leak is follow up, not footfall. The Center for Exhibition Industry Research finds roughly 80 percent of trade show leads get no follow up, and many that do take more than six days, which is the cheapest ROI leak in the sector to fix.","Scale sets the stakes. ADIPEC drew more than 205,000 attendees in 2025, about 95 percent of them decision makers, purchasers or influencers; Gastech convenes 50,000 plus across the gas, LNG and hydrogen value chain; CERAWeek gathers over 10,000 senior leaders. Each event is for a different job.","Measure influenced pipeline, not badge scans. On a 12 to 24 month energy sale, last touch attribution structurally under credits events because their influence lands early and mid cycle. Use sourced versus influenced pipeline, cost per opportunity, and committee coverage instead.","2026 changes the tooling, not the logic. AI now enriches leads and drafts follow up, event platforms feed structured intent data into ABM, and the earned content produced around a show becomes a durable, AI discoverable asset that extends its pipeline influence for months."],"sections":[{"id":"what","q":"Why does the energy industry still run on events when most B2B has gone digital?","h":"An event is a compression event","p":["While much of B2B marketing has migrated online, the energy industry remains stubbornly, and rationally, event led. The reason is in the buying behaviour. Gartner's research shows a typical B2B purchase now involves 6 to 10 stakeholders, and that buyers spend only about 17 percent of the entire buying journey meeting with suppliers, with as little as 5 to 6 percent of their time given to any single supplier. Face time is scarce and precious, and an energy trade show is one of the few places you can put several members of a buying committee in front of your team in the same week.","That is why it helps to think of a major show not as a marketing channel but as a compression event. It concentrates a year's worth of otherwise scattered committee access into three or four days. National oil companies, majors and engineering contractors travel in delegations, so a single booked meeting can seat three decision roles at once. Nothing in a purely digital programme replicates that density of relevant, senior, in person contact.","This is also why events are a brand and demand engine at once, the live expression of the argument we make in brand versus demand and the 95:5 rule. The show floor reaches the 95 percent who are not buying today and the 5 percent who are, in the same room, which is a rare and valuable overlap."]},{"id":"which","q":"Which energy events actually matter, and what is each one for?","h":"Match the event to the commercial objective","p":["Not every event does the same job, and treating them interchangeably is the first budgeting mistake. ADIPEC, hosted by ADNOC in Abu Dhabi each November, is the largest energy event in the world, drawing more than 205,000 attendees in 2025 with around 95 percent described as decision makers, purchasers or influencers, and thousands of exhibitors across oil, gas and the wider transition. It is the flagship for scale and Gulf market access. Gastech, which convenes 50,000 plus attendees from 150 or more countries and over a thousand exhibitors, is the primary venue for the gas, LNG, hydrogen and climate technology value chain, and it rotates location, moving to Bangkok for 2026 after Milan, which shifts the buyer mix.","CERAWeek by S&P Global in Houston is a different animal entirely. With over 10,000 senior participants, more than 1,600 C suite executives and scores of ministers, it is a leadership and deal shaping conference, not an exhibition hall. Its value is executive access and the conversations around it, not booth traffic. The Offshore Technology Conference, also in Houston, is the core offshore engineering and services event, drawing on the order of 30,000 professionals, while Enlit Europe is the counterpart for grids, renewables, storage and digitalisation, with 15,000 plus professionals and hundreds of exhibitors.","The practical rule is to pick the event for the commercial outcome you need. A stand at ADIPEC or Gastech is a lead and relationship engine that justifies a full exhibition build; CERAWeek is an executive access play best run through delegates and hosted meetings, not a booth. The exhibiting cost for the flagship shows is typically quoted on application and runs, for a mid size custom stand, into the low to mid six figures once space, build, staffing and travel are counted, an estimate that makes the case for engineering the return rather than hoping for it."]},{"id":"preshow","q":"How do you book pipeline before you even arrive?","h":"The show is won in the six weeks before it opens","p":["The exhibitors who generate pipeline decide who they need to meet long before they arrive. The first move is to build the target account list, then the event plan, not the other way around. Pull the published exhibitor and speaker lists, match them against your ideal customer profile and your open pipeline, and identify the named accounts whose committees will be in the building. Because buyers give suppliers so little of their time, walk up traffic cannot be the plan.","The second move is to pre book meetings against the buying committee rather than a single contact. Since an energy decision needs 6 to 10 stakeholders spanning engineering, procurement, operations, HSE and finance, aim to seat several roles from one target account, which is far easier when they are travelling as a delegation. This is the same account logic we set out in account based marketing for energy B2B, applied to a compressed few days.","The third move is to earn a platform. Speaking slots, panels and hosted roundtables at CERAWeek and the conference tracks of ADIPEC and Gastech confer a credibility that a rented stand cannot, and they double as lead magnets. Finally, instrument everything before you land, with unique tracking links, a booked meeting calendar in the CRM, and lead capture fields that record committee role and buying stage, not just a business card."],"pillars":[{"n":"01","t":"Target accounts first","d":"Build the named account list from exhibitor and attendee data, matched to your ICP and open pipeline, then design the event around who you must meet. With buyers giving any single supplier only 5 to 6 percent of their attention, staff should qualify fast, disqualify faster, and spend their minutes on genuine fit. Forty well qualified conversations that get logged and worked will out produce five hundred scanned badges that become a list nobody touches. The primary activity should be executing the meetings and demos booked in advance, with walk ups treated as secondary.","Much of what happens at an energy show is not net new lead capture at all, it is relationship maintenance on live 12 to 24 month deals. Those conversations are pipeline influence, and they should be logged as touches against the account, not discarded because they did not produce a fresh business card. Capture the intent signals in the moment, which product or track brought them, competitors they mentioned, project timelines and committee role, because that is the raw material for segmented follow up.","The operational habit that separates winners is feeding leads into the CRM daily, not at the end of the week. The follow up clock starts on day one, and in a sector where 80 percent of leads are never worked, simply being organised and fast is a structural advantage over most of the hall."]},{"id":"postshow","q":"Why do most exhibitors waste their leads, and how do you not?","h":"Speed, then a nurture mapped to the project, not the month","p":["The single biggest, cheapest to fix leak in event ROI is follow up. The Center for Exhibition Industry Research finds that roughly 80 percent of trade show leads receive no follow up at all, and a large share of the exhibitors who do follow up take more than six days to do it. Because buyers frequently reward the vendor who responds first and best, following up within hours, tiered by how well the lead qualified, is a genuine competitive edge that costs almost nothing but organisation.","Speed alone is not enough, because a single email cannot move a 12 to 24 month, 6 to 10 person decision. The follow up has to become a multi touch nurture, a personalised recap, then relevant technical content, then an executive briefing, then an invitation to the next event. Critically, in energy that sequence should be mapped to the project milestones the buyer actually works to, the FID, the tender, the budget cycle, rather than to a generic 30 day marketing cadence. Feed the intent signals captured on the floor into this nurture so each touch is relevant.","The connective tissue is the intent system we describe in intent data in energy B2B. Event behaviour, which sessions they attended, which products they asked about, is intent data, and treating it that way turns a pile of badges into a prioritised, evidence led follow up programme rather than a mass email nobody opens."]},{"id":"measure","q":"How do you prove an event paid off when the deal closes two years later?","h":"Influenced pipeline, cost per opportunity, committee coverage","p":["The measurement problem is real. A deal touched at ADIPEC in November may not close until 2027, so any model that snaps shut 30 or 90 days after the show will systematically under credit the event and over credit whatever channel happened to be the last touch before signature. The fix is to measure on the timescale of the sale. And understand why last touch fails here specifically, with 6 to 10 stakeholders each doing their own research and only 17 percent of the journey spent with suppliers, the final touch before signature is nearly random relative to what actually built conviction, which brand and relationship work did months earlier.
